I promise- this blog is not all about me.  I will be bringing you information and tidbits that you can use in your own relationships with dogs.  That is what this blog is all about, truly.

But this post- The “About Me” post IS all about me, just in case you are wondering who the heck I am and why am I writing about dogs.  In case you are interested, check out my new “About Me” page that explains it all.

Sofie, our English Springer Spaniel hangs with me every day while I work

Sofie, our English Springer Spaniel hangs with me every day while I work

Hey, I’d love to see any photos of your dogs in the workplace today, since it is officially “Take Your Dog to Work Day” today.

I must admit, for me and my husband, EVERY day is Take your Dog(s) to Work Day since we both work out of our home offices.

I thought I’d share a few pics and a list of the pros (and possibly the cons) of sharing your office with dogs.

There are definitely major benefits, for instance:

  • There is never a lack of foot warmers in the winter time : )
  • Our offices have three “therapy dogs” on staff for the times when work gets stressful (just stop and hug one of the dogs for quick relief!)
  • They supply a great reason to get off the posterior and away from the desk for a walk in the great outdoors
  • They are the first ones to let you know that you are always doing a great job

It’s not always totally rosy having a dog around in the office when:

  • They snore loudly during a business call
  • They’ve just dropped a slimy toy in your colleague’s handbag and she’s not a big fan of dogs
  • You’re ready to walk out the door to meet someone for lunch only to discover that they have gotten into the kitchen trash and strewn it all about the house
  • The dog that has decided to sleep in your office today has atrocious gas
My husband, Steve, enjoys a little "stress therapy" during the day with Otis, our pug

Still, even with the cons, the pros definitely take it.

In a corporate setting, if you have been invited to participate in Take Your Dog to Work Day, simple dog etiquette rules apply:

  • Do not allow crotch sniffing or jumping (Do we really even have to mention this?!)
  • Keep your dog with you at all times
  • Don’t take a dog into the office that isn’t properly socialized to people or other dogs- your day will be miserable and so will everyone else’s
  • It’s a little late for this, but hopefully you know not to take a dirty or stinky dog to work.  Leave stinky toys and chews at home too.
I found this hilarious cat lovers comic on the Rhymes With Orange blog- enjoy!

Please comment about how your work day experiences went with dogs in the office today or other days, and link us over to photos too.  Hope you enjoy a few of the pictures of our dogs in the office.  It’s just another day here….and I love it!

Dug the Dog from Pixar's new movie, "Up"

Dug the Dog from Pixar's new movie, "Up"

If you haven’t seen Pixar’s newest release yet, “Up,” I would highly encourage you to go and check it out.

I had heard from several adults that this was a really enjoyable movie, yet I still approached this movie option with a small bit of reluctance.  I’ve seen my share of horrible family movies over the years, and even Pixar has made a dud or two (think “The Incredibles,” for instance).

Happily, I could tell right away that this was going to be a good movie.  First, the short film that played just before the feature, “Partly Cloudy,” was adorable, and had me laughing even before “Up” began.

Carl Fredrickson, the main character of the movie loves adventure even as a young boy, and meets a girl named Ellie who matches his love of excitement.  They continue their lives together and grow old, with big plans to go to South America and fulfill their lifelong dreams there.

Before they have the chance to take their trip, Ellie dies.  Carl sets off to make the trip alone, but inadvertantly has a a young wilderness explorer scout who has mistakenly stowed away with him on his adventure.

This unlikely pair must overcome a lot of hurdles along the way, including a pack of wild dogs who have special collars that allow them to be understood by humans.  The dog scenes are hilarious, and one of the dogs, Dug, becomes a fixture in the small group.  Dug is picked on by the other dogs, but is clearly the sweetest dog of the group.  There are some very funny scenes involving the dreaded Elizabethan collar, tennis balls, and references to squirrels that will have any dog lover yucking it up.

The movie tugged at my heartstrings, too, in the relationship of Carl with Ellie, and the growing relationship that ensues between Carl and the young boy who has come along on the trip, Russell.

Throw in some peril, an evil villain and some good old animal activism (plus some great dog scenes, of course) and you have one great little movie.

Go see it!  You will enjoy it.

Me with Two of my Sleepy DogsI’ve had the idea to start a blog now for quite some time.  A lot of times I have something dog-related that I want to write about, but it just won’t work for my main site about dogs, Dog Paw Print.  Usually this is because  it is something fleeting, or pertinent to something happening about dogs in the news, and so I feel it shouldn’t have a permanent, full page written about it on my site, but it still is something that I’d like to share with my readers.

Let me introduce myself to you, in case you don’t already know me from my other dog sites.  My name is Lori Krout, and I have three great dogs, along with a family who loves dogs as much as I do.  I have always lived with dogs growing up, and so has my husband, so we felt like it was natural to raise our daughter with dogs too.

Our daughter wanted a kitten when she was young, and I am allergic to cats, so I quickly tried to convert her.  It was slow going- not as quick of a conversion that I would have liked- but she’s now a big “dog person” too at age 12, and is getting ready to start her own site about dogs over summer vacation.  My sites are all more practical in nature, but she is a girly-girl all the way and wants to create a site relating to dog fashion, so that is something I will be helping her with this summer.

Another thing that you might like to know about me and my family is that we live adjacent to a biking and walking trail called the Pinellas Trail here in West Central Florida, and we have had our share of dogs “find” us over the years.  They seem to know to come to our house (or maybe they just smell the rest of our motley crew of dogs!),  but we provide them a safe place to be while we find their families, and in every case we have always been able to reunite dogs with their families, which feels pretty good to us.  One of the dogs who found us is a dog that is now part of our family, our pug Otis.  We did find his family after he walked into our garage one day, but they were moving and my daughter is a bit fanatical about pugs, so then there were three (dogs, that is).  I do have the whole weird and wonderful story of the Christmas Miracle of the Pug on my Dog Paw Print website, in case you want to hear more.  The dogs will be sure to reveal themselves here soon enough, so check back in.

Signing off for now-
